KICD Invites Teachers to Join Panel for CBC Senior School Curriculum Review

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has called for applications to join panels set to review the senior schools for the final stage of implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.

In a notice issued via the government publication MyGov, KICD called for teachers, teacher educators, either in colleges or universities, and professionals to help develop, review, and approve curricula, programmes, and curriculum support materials for senior schools.“The KICD invites teachers, teacher educators (in colleges and universities), and professionals in the industry with relevant qualifications and experience to apply for membership in subject panels for senior schools,” reads part of the notice issued on Tuesday, 4th February.

Subject panels are responsible for initiating and guiding curriculum development activities in their respective subjects. They keep existing syllabuses under constant review and make necessary recommendations for updates or improvements. The senior school comprises Grades 10, 11, and 12, targeting learners aged 15 to 17 years. Senior school under the new system is set to lay the foundation for further education, training at the tertiary level, and entry into the workforce.

Upon completing Grade 9, students transition into senior school, where they begin to specialise in their chosen career paths. The CBC framework offers three primary pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).The inaugural cohort of senior schools under CBC is scheduled to commence Grade 10 in January 2026. This follows their progression through Junior Secondary School, which includes Grades 7, 8, and 9. This is as the 8-4-4 system is set to fold with the last KCSE exams set for 2027.

Applicants must be certified teachers in any subject offered at senior schools or teacher training institutions, registered with the Teachers Service Commission or a relevant professional body. They must have at least five years of teaching experience at the secondary school, college, university, or industry level.

Previous experience as a panellist should be noted. Experience as an examiner with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) or other internationally recognised examination bodies is an added advantage.

The review comes at a time when the Ministry of Education plans to incorporate maritime training into the CBC. This initiative aims to tap into the Blue Economy, which has the potential to generate revenue and create numerous job opportunities annually.“Applicants should submit letters forwarded by the Heads of Institution and attach copies of relevant certificates and testimonials,” said KICD.

All applications are to be addressed to the Director or Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, PO Box 30231, 00100, Nairobi, by Friday, February 14, 2025.
